Does that mean that it only has to do with programming, software and stuff?
Or it also applies to design in physical objects, like for example a bag, etc?

it means easy to use. If you are using a gadget ,usability design means this gadget is very customer friend gadget .

I'm guessing here.......but maybe the design of an item that would have a wide-ranging appeal to many diffrent user categories? eg.
Old/young
Male/female
Black/white
Disabled/able-bodied

it means design with the user mindset. understanding the flow of navigation, predicting where the user would click and how to explain process in a simple manner, it is everything from color coordination, user behavior to user education. this skillset comes with years of experience and exposure to various projects.
