I had a $1200 medical bill. I have paid $500 over the past 2 years to the Dr's office. Now a collection agency is calling me. They will not allow me to make my low payments. What will happen if I just continue to pay the Dr's office?

once it goes to a collection agency the dr office has wiped their hands of it. what you need to make sure is the amount the collections is wanting. they can add addition dollars to any collection, this is for any few they want to collect for, for process fees. if you make them to your dr still they will just keep it in their accounts receivable in your acct there. the good news it seems like you are half way in paying it off. if you can make some sacrifices until its paid off you may have too. good luck.

A collection agency does not work on commission. They actually buy the debt from the creditor, in this care your doctor, and attempt to collect it from you. Your doctor may have collected 70% of the debt from the CA which is better than getting nothing from you, that's why creditors go to these services to get something on the debt owed them. The CA will in turn harrass you to pay them, not the doctor. So to answer your question, no, the doctor is now out of it. You are now dealing exclusively with a sleazy collection agency on this. You do have rights. Write to them a certified letter explaining your circumstance and your intent to pay. Also include that you do not want them calling you and longer. They have to cease collection calls if they are told to do so otherwise they are in violation of federal law and can be sued. Hope this helps.

you should be able to keep paying the doctor. That doctor isn't worth a crap if they're calling a collection agency on you. They have to accept payment no matter what the amount you give them. The collection agency works for commission. Of course they will tell you that you can't pay what you've been paying but they are not the doctor who is being owed the money. As long as you continue to pay, there's nothing a collection service can do about it

Everything is negotiable. You should call the doctor's office and explain your situation, and; that you have faithfully been repaying the debt over the past 2 years, and ask them for their reasoning for turning over the debt to a collection agency. See if you can agree with the doctor's office on a specified payment plan.
