Tough question dude.
Here my opinion :
Death metal - a sub genre of the heavy metal music, if we listen to this kind of music then we will find these : The rhythm guitar part being turn into the low tune, to make some heavy sound, but in lead guitar the play it quite high tunes to express the aggressive and the brutality, and all of that guitar play in some speedy and fast tempo, then add with some low tunes bass guitar, to make it more brutal and play with some aggressive attitude in fast and furious music, and then add again with some blasting powerful bass drum pounding and high speed drumming and of course brutal and aggressive to make an extreme metal music. Then they put some amazing growl in vocal section to make it more brutal.
Doom metal - In rhythm guitar part they also put it in a low tunes, to make a heavy sound and then at lead guitar the tunes is quite high but not as high as death metal music, and during they play the guitar they play it in some slow speed, then they add it with some more low tunes in bass guitar to make it more darker and cold, then the drum keep the beat in some slow tempo to make it more and more dark. Then they place the heavy tones at vocal section to make it so very cold music.
That's what the different in my opinion.

Doom metal is slower and is explified by Black Sabbath. that should be an indication how old this term is. Death Metal refers more to singers with that deep cookie monster voice.

Doom metal ruins your life almost to the point of Death...Death metal finished you completely off and makes you hate your dad even more cause he didn't let your band play in the garage.

you mean pure death vs pure doom? (you know.. their is a lot of brand playing some thing betweens the two.)
the best way to answer is to listen your self,
listen to the doom like Cathedral/Forest of Equilibrium then switch to Death like naplam death/Harmony Corruption, then you will see the big difference.

Death Metal is metal that is already dead, Doom metal is metal that is *almost* dead.
