I believe it's always easier to remove a round manhole cover than any other shape. Most cast iron pipe and underground concrete castings are round. When extended upward I would think the cover would be round . There are exceptions. Many covers have earthen holes which were bored into the earth with huge screw augers which are round. There are always latter type stairs going down the hole. Above ground street drains can be rectangular because they're placed next to a curb where cars drive over them at low speeds, usually parking.

First I don't understand the connection between this question and the subject here, which is cars and transportation. I have never seen anyone use a man hole or its cover for transportation.

But I'll give you the definitive answer anyway, despite that.

So they don't fall in!

Manholes, which interconnect underground sewerage pipes, and serve as a point of entry for cleaning the pipes, are located at every major sewer pipe junction, and are capped with round manhole covers. The reason for the circular construction of these covers is, quite simply, that covers of any other shape would fall through the manholes by virtue of their varying diameters. Circular manhole covers do not vary in width, or in diameter, as is the case with these other shapes, thus remaining in place despite the street traffic running roughshod over them.

Manufacturers craft the manhole covers together with the smaller sized lip, upon which they rest, at the same time to ensure a tightly sealed fit. Additionally, the manufacture of circular manhole covers is easier and more accurate than the manufacture of covers of any other shape. Lastly, round manhole covers, once removed, require less lifting and less manpower, as their shape allows them to be rolled.

take any other shape and then put a lid on it...shift that lid due to traffic or walking and that lid can slide in. this is why when you see street repairs and they lay down those big sheets of metal to drive over....they have to brace the sides with blacktop. otherwise you'd risk moving the plate and falling into the hole.

only a circle can't fall in and only a circle can handle forces from all angles and directions.
