What country are you in? If not America, then I suspect the American decisions are in brackets. Generally, those citation rules are very specific, and there should be a handbook you used in first year law school Legal Writing and Research.

If you didn't go to law school, go to the bookstore selling books to law students.

the adaptation is via the fact in an equation you may do brackets then parentheses. there's a distinction,using fact in case you probably did the parentheses first you may result with the incorrect answer.
