You're probably thinking of Barbaro. In the case of celebrated horses like Secretariat, Ruffian, Man O' War and other champion racehorses, most that die or are euthanized on the farm are buried in their entirety.

In some cases, where a horse dies on the racetrack and the farm wants to bring him/her home, or where there may be regulations regarding the burial of animals, it is tradiational for the farm to bury the head, hooves and heart of the horse (in the case of a stallion, the testicles are also sometimes included).

There have been some interesting cases of what's befallen a racehorse after his death. When Northern Dancer, the greatest commercial stallion of the 20th century died, his owners wanted to take him to Canada, to the farm where he was born, and bury him there. (He died at Windfields Farm in Maryland, he was bred and born at Windfields Farm in Canada.) Department of Agriculture restrictions would normally have prevented this, but Windfields had obtained, in advance, a special waiver and when Northern Dancer died, his body was placed in a special coffin and shipped to Windfields Canada, where he is buried.

Sea-Bird II, one of the greatest runners ever bred in France, was unceramoniously sent to a rendering plant after he died, creating a great deal of outcry at the time. Ferdinand, winner of the Kentucky Derby some years back, and champion racehorse Exceller, are two that ended up being sent to the killers in spite of their champion status.

Most horses are sent to rendering plants upon their deaths. It's just not possible to bury every horse.

It isnt very common for people to bury thier dead horses. It would take to big of a hole. There is a number you can call to pick up the dead horses and cows and any large animal and they will pick it up and then all the carcasses get taken to a place where they are all ground up and recycled as in dog food and what not. Question why would you think that they would only bury the head anyway? It is the body that blots and then ends up smelling so bad.
When ever you see on dry dog food meat by products you know that the meat is an assortment of various animals including road kill.

Another question by a child???

Dead horses are generally hauled off by a rendering service, for a fee, and turned into fertilizer. If the horse is still alive, but considered no longer ridable, many owners donate the live horse to a wild animal sanctuary, where they are shot, then given as meat to the big cats. Horses that are euthanized by a vet are usually not fed to animals -- the ethanizing solution is an overdose of Phenobarb, plus a drug that stops the heart. This usually is then considered not good to eat for an animal, but actually, the digestion probably takes care of the small amount left in the tissues.

No, hon, they don't put the head in the dirt..................

What would be the point of that?

The rest of the horse would rot and stink. You have to bury the whole thing!

where else would they put it? unless someone want to stuff it and put it in the living room or donate it to university biology department, it should be buried or grind into some other animal feed or turn bones into gello.(yes, the type that you buy in supermarket)
