Because humans are so conceited, egotistical,
and over-impressed with their own abilities. The
notion of many religions that they are the chosen
people of god just adds to the conceit.

To be a little more specific, one must ask, superior
in what way? Not in all ways, certainly. Many animals are stronger than humans, have better
sensory equipment than humans, are better able
to survive under adverse conditions than humans,
etc. Human beings are, physically, relatively
primitive in a number of ways, such as retaining
five digits on hands and feet, for example.

The main things humans have going for them are
intelligence and language. These have enabled them to speed up the rate of change in their culture tremendously. They have also allowed them to
so rape and destroy much of their environment
that they are in danger of exterminating themselves. Their relatively uncontrolled rate of
reproduction endangers both themselves and all
the other organisms on earth. Just in my lifetime
the earth's human population has tripled or even
perhaps quadrupled. For the rest of the earth's
living inhabitants, the best thing that could happen
would be a plague that would reduce the human
population to about one fourth what it is now, and
cut their domestic animal population by about 90
percent.
