Pads and tampons actually. The pads were generally made from cloth (on the rag), and sometimes stuffed with absorbent moss. They were tied to a belt. Women also used tampons made of fabric as well. Some cultures didn't use anything, and didn't go out in public.

At different times and in different places women have used old rags, cotton batting, old clothing, bandages, paper, etc.. In some cultures, women were ostrasized and had to keep away from men when having their period. These women sometimes would just bleed and clean themselves when needed.

They used grass, sponges, rags, and it is even said that where there were nothing used to absorb the blood that trails of blood was left behind them....how gross.

I think they used to your folds of cloth, kinda like a diaper sandwhiched between your legs. From a quick google it seems differnt cultures used differnt materials.
