Why can't pur government allow gay people in the army?
Are the homophobes just afraid of a thousand guys with M16s going, "Who'd you call a phaggot?" ~John Stewart

Well I can only speak to my countries attitudes and that is that we have out gay servicemen and women. That said, it is a wonder that the US continues this nonsense. You have men and women right now in Iraq, dying for their country and what does the country say to them "We like you well enough as cannon fodder but don't you dare ask to be treated with respect or dignity"
Israel, the European Union, Russia, Canada, Britain and other nations allow openly proud uniform wearing gay servicemen and women, why not the US? It's a question that many outside the US ponder, especially given that the US needs more soldiers yet will not tap a source that has, in the past, proven itself time and time again.

There are gays in the military but its under the "dont ask, dont tell" rule. The only reason I can think of why they wouldn't want openly gay men in the military is that they would think it would make them less of a man. You know how the military is and how butch and manly they all think they are. There's so much homophobia in the military and its not going to change for a helluva long time. Of course, there really is no reason to tell them you are gay when you enlist. I mean, it has absolutely nothing to do with the situations you will be involved in. There is no need to advertise the fact that one is gay. Of course, personally I see no reason why it should have to be kept a horrible dark secret either. Go figure.

There was an article in The Advocate recently about the shift in attitudes toward "don't ask don't tell" and how 73% of active duty military said they would NOT have a problem serving with a gay or lesbian comrade. In addition, 21% surveyed knew of someone gay or lesbian in their unit.
I forget who it is but a congressman or senator is going to be submitting for consideration legislation that will repeal "don't ask don't tell." The article also included a list of the higher commanding officers (many retired) who support the repeal.

Yup, I think Mr. Stewart than the right idea!! I'm sure Bill Maher laughed his butt off at that comment!!
(not that mr maher is gay...he's certainly far from it...but he's been a HUGE supporter of gay rights!)
Ok...now I'm laughing too!!
Being ex-military, I can tell you there have ALWAYS been gays in the military for as long as humans have warred against other humans. It's a natural breeding area for homosexual behavior, kind of like prison gays.
But truthfully, in today's military it's not so much the "prison gays" but honest to G'd gays and lesbians who feel strongly for their country and their duty to serve and protect the constitution from enemies both foreign and domestic.
Unfortunately it's that last word in that vow that all too many Higher-up conveniently forget!

Well, the way things are going, I think that they are going to need to change that policy. The military might need every body they can get, and not turn down or kick anyone out. They made fun of that policy on Family Guy last season I believe!
