Private universities in the USA often range up to $30,000 per year for tuition plus living costs of $10,000 for room and board (housing and food). The second level private schools cost just as much as the top private schools, but there is a greater chance of getting a merit scholarship at the second level private schools.

Public universities may charge from $1000 to $10,000 per year for students from their own state, and much more than that for students from other states. But there are many scholarships. In our state you can go to the State U for no tuition if you are in the top 10% of your HS class.

To check on the exact costs of tuition at 100s of different schools, check the 'college finder' section of the collegeboard.com website.

Costs vary widely. Top private universities (e.g., Harvard, Stanford) can run up to $40,000 a year as of the last couple of years (I haven't seen the newest figures).

Publically funded institutions are much cheaper. The least expensive will always be public universities in the state where you are a legal resident--they charge lower tuition for residents. Costs at these institutions will run around $5-15,000/year depending on whether or not you live on campus. In addition, many states have programs for good students that provide scholarships; the federal government also provides grants for good students, based on need.

Bear in mind that the cost does not reflect the quality of the school. Many public institutions are ranked as highly as the Ivy League schools--and there are private schools that are mediocre. Also, you can defer much of the cost of college by getting student loans--these don't have to be paid back while your are in school--and have good terms for inteerest and repayment. Just remember that this type of aid hast to be repaid, unlike grants and scholarships.
