I'm looking for more of a really good "hole in the wall" type place. I know about Crustaceans, The Water Grill, etc. What are some good lesser known places?

Try Pastis on Beverly or Bella Cucina on Hollywood Blvd. Both are smaller and more intimate, but have excellent food and wine. Neither are "dives" or technically "holes in the wall" but are a little different from your bigger, more well-known places.

Cafe Bizou on Ventura and Hazeltine. Opened by chefs but price-wise, accessible to the rest of us. Need reservations, especially on weekends. Awesome steak frites - filet mignon for $20! $2 corkage, $1 salad and soup side to an entree. Atmosphere is great - intimate, candlelit, cozy, Sinatra, classy. Fair share of people in "the industry," so a little attitude, though.

A special dinner would be one that you create yourself and put the time and effort in the kitchen when she is not around.
So START COOKING:)

Here's a suggestion. Maker some Shrimp Coctail Salad.
Real simple easy to brew up.
Bake two Cornish Hens in the overn sprinkle some salt, pepper and season garlic and cloves and oregano
Bake till golden brown at 275 degrees.

the cliff's edge. it's on sunset blvd behind a 99 cents store. valet parking is on the side of the store. don't let the surroundings fool you because the place is surprisingly nice! that's the best hole in the wall-type place i've been to. check out a review...
