Anything with Dextromethorphan will help ease a cough, it's over the counter and you can find it in many cold and cough medicines.
For the sore throat, I reccomend any type of Halls with eucaplyptis and menthol in them, but if that's a little too strong for you, then try a throat spray or a Hot Toddy. (2 parts rum or whiskey, 1 part hot water, 1-2 tsp sugar.)

I've used fresh sage tea and had good results. About 1 tblspoon chopped leaves in a tea ball. Steeped for a few minutes. At least 2 - 3 cups a day. Also, Honey w/ any type tea is soothing for the throat or just take it straight from the spoon. Honey isn't recommended for children under 5. Sage is good for any bronchial infection.

Herbal lobelia will stop a cough in 3 doses, but I can't find anywhere that stocks it now. Gerrard House used to do it and the pills were easy to get down. Now we have a bottle of Potters in the fridge for emergencies but it doesn't taste so good and is not so potent, lobelia is only one of the ingredients.

Strepsils are useful I prefer the orange flavour ones, and a Honey and lemon or blackcurrant linctus- Liquifruita is good. Look for ones with ipecacuana.

If associated with a cold then take stewed or baked apple with cinnamon.

I had a doctor that used to have me mix honey, lemon juice and a wee bit of Canadian Whiskey. Put a teaspoon full in your mouth and let it desolve and drip down your throat.

The whiskey numbs, the lemon juice sterilizes and the honey keeps it from tasting nasty and going down too fast.

try 3 parts honey, 1 part lemon juice and 1 part whiskey, modify for your taste.

For the cough, put 3 quartered up onions in 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil. Put pot on table and lay a towel over your head and inhale deeply and slowly. There is something in the onion that helps the bronchia heal. repeat about every 2 hours or as needed.
Works like a charm.

Good luck

My mom had a good remedy that I have used on my own children. When I was young there were 5 other siblings and myself, and our parents couldn't afford cough syrups. She would put a yellow onion in a glass jar, add about a cup of sugar and wait a few days. The syrup that it made not only helped our coughs, it also helped with congestion, without the alcohol they use in cold medicines.

The sage gargle described by the person in a previous person is good (sage is a good antibacteria), and you can also gargle with soluble aspirin to reduce the swelling. I have heard it said by a doctor that you need to take twice the recommended amount of cough medicine to have an effect, but I would personally ask a pharamcist in case it reacts with other medication.

Coat a penguin in chilli sauce and roast it over an open fire. The combined chilli-blubber pong will have up and running in three minutes 12 seconds.
