I am building a canopy above my front door (weather protection). It is a pitched roof with one side attached to the house and one side supported by two stilts. The total height is 2.5mtrs, do I need building regs approval?

I doubt it but you better check with the local's first.

If it's going to be a rigid permanent roof, or attached in a way that it can be considered part of the house, then most likely, yes.
Though if you're talking one of those retractable awnings that are basically just hung on the side of the house, you might not.

You might not need a permit for this type of work, but you should certainly check with authorities first. Call the building department at city hall.
