It's what people tell you to do to help shut down your over-active brain so you can go to sleep. You're supposed to picture, for example, an unlimited number of sheep one at a time jumping over a stile, and you count them mentally.

Personally, I find this doesn't work at all! Concentrating on anything, even something boring and repetitive like counting sheep, keeps my mind active and prevents me from drifting off to sleep.

When you can't sleep, it helps to think of something completely random to clear your mind of troubles that may be nagging you, so counting sheep is supposed to help with that. And picturing/counting one sheep after another is quite so boring, therefore it is supposed to put you fast to sleep. Never worked for me!

If you have trouble falling asleep, one solution offered by people might be to "try counting sheep". The idea being, playing this mind game would cause fatigue.
