In Tennessee if you are on government subsidized health care they will test the mother after the birth. I think it's a great idea to test as soon as the pregnancy is detected. Not to punish the mother but to allow her to get assistance for her problem. Also, I do not think that drug testing a a violation of any ones rights. If you want government assistance then don't do drugs. If you want to use, then pay for your own medical bills.

Only if the doctor suspects it. I know I never got tested, but I know someone who was because on her first visit, she told them that she had done drugs in the past. It must have raised a red flag to them, so they tested her several times throughout her pregnancy (which were all negative, thank God.)

it is illegal to drug test at the doctor without consent. a patient would have to sign a consent form before the test was done. if a doctor suspects drug use, he would approach the patient about it and refer them to a drug counselor. if the doctor doesn't catch it, then the poor baby might have defects due to the mom's drug abuse. i think it is a good idea, but then again not because it is an intrusion to privacy.

no they dont and yes i think they should, it could possibly help alot of drug addicted babies, it would at least show that the mother has a problem and if she isnt willing to get help then the baby needs to be given up for adoption and given to someone who will not harm them like that again. i think people who do drugs while pregnant are just inconsiderate and could care less about their child.

no, they do not. you are going to the doctor because you want to -- and you would have to want a drug test as well. that would be rediculous. even if OB's drug tested, what could they do about it?? if someone is STUPID enough to do drugs while they are pregnant, they are not going to listen when their doc tells them to stop.

unfortunately no they do not here in Florida at least. If you are pregnant and using I really hope that you get help...the last thing we need is another drug addicted baby in the states care.

I think it would be great if they did the testing. Instead of waiting for the birth.
