I hope you're going shortly, because visiting the Outer Banks in the off-season makes for an even better experience. If you're lucky you might even get to experience a Nor'easter!

Obviously there is the Wright Brothers' museum, memorial and visitors center to enjoy at Kill Devil Hill itself. This is open year-round and is well staffed by National Parks' Rangers.

One of the features I really enjoy about the Outer Banks is the lighthouses -- Currituck Beach Lighthouse (built with over one-million red bricks); Bodie Island Lighthouse; Cape Hatteras Lighthouse; and Ocracoke Island Lighthouse.

The Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station is a great look at what life was like for those tasked with saving those "upon the sea". These stations pre-date the Coast Guard and this one was built in 1874. Nice tour.

The "Lost Colony" is also nearby, but with driving and touring there it requires a full day.

If you head a little north up to Duck (yes...there really is a place named Duck) you can find great local places to eat that really give you a taste (on your plate and metaphorically) of the region. The Roadside Bar & Grill is wonderful for meeting locals and hear some of the islands bands. If you have the money to splurge one night I'd suggest eating at The Lifesaving Station Restaurant. That's part of The Sanderling resort and not only great dinning, but a beautiful setting as well.

Look into the off-season rates for some of the B&Bs down there -- there have to be some great deals. I'm also a huge fan of supporting the local economy; there are a number of family run motels and hotels around Kill Devil Hills there are worthy of your travel dollars.

The free copy of the Outer Banks Travel Guide is a great resource. You can get that here: http://www.outerbanks.org/travel_guide/order_travel_guide/

If you want any additional details (or even some contact names down there with locals) please drop me an email directly. Have a great time! --Andy

Absolutely! Kill Devil Hills is where the Wright Brothers had their first successful flight. There are some fabulous restaurants in town, if you like seafood.

Have fun!
