Has anyone ever used Malarone malaria tablets while travelling? Going to Eritrea next week and am wondering which ones to go for. I've been given the choice of malarone or the cheaper doxycycline, which appears to have more potential side effects.
Any advice?

Malarone works well. I took them for a month while living in Papua New Guinea. Always be sure to take them with food or you will become extremely sick.

I have taken Malarone and didnt have any problems, It did cause me to have some really vivid dreams though I dont know if it was the pills that did it or some other reason but the dreams stopped when I stopped taking the malarone.

Malarone seems to be fine; we've taken it several times. I think people had problems with vivid dreams and that kind of side effect with lariam. Here's our general advice on malaria: http://www.mousetourstravels.com/malaria.html Have you asked your doctor which is more effective? You can check at the CDC site we link to and see what they say.
