The NFL is very difficult to get into. Most coaches want proof the players can succeed and also knows the game (i.e. college experience). One of the biggest obstacles would be the quick starting movements that are necessary to play defensive line. I think some of the sumo wrestlers that are fit and strong could probably be successful. I always wondered the same thing about Australian rules football players, until one became a punter a few years back.

A Sumo certainly wouldn't be a linebacker -- they have to be reasonably quick and mobile and so don't often go above 260 pounds. But maybe a Sumo could lose 100 pounds and be an offensive guard. The problem is, last I checked, American football isn't a huge sport in Japan.

Also, they may not like a sport where they have to wear pants and cover up their huge disgusting butt cheeks.

Because a sumo wrestler would not make a great linebacker he'd be to big and slow, but he can be an exceptional pass and run blocker thats what sumo wrestling is holding your ground whil driving your opponent to the dirt (or out of the ring)

Because the position requires not so much great size as it does strength and quickness. The linebacker must be able to move quickly to be in position to make the plays he needs to make. The sumo wrestler would never catch up to a ballcarrier to begin with -- so how could he possibly make a tackle??

youre not too bright, are you?????? sumo wrestlers are MUCH too big to play LB, they would be offensive or defensive line players. as for why they arent in the NFL, they are superstars in Japan, why would they want to come to America and be a nobody? being a sumo wrestler is an honor in Japan, if you knew more about Japanese culture you wouldnt ask such questions. PLUS ..... theyre surrounded by Japanese women all the time, sure beats being surrounded by American women all the time.

too fat and slow, they couldent even make it as a lineman because they dont have the speed or agility yes some sumo are very fast but the train more for a quick burst in the nfl your talking about playing for 3 hours i seriously doubt they would have the stamina

Because they are too fat. Defensive Players are big, but are extremely athletic and agile. Sumo wrestlers would have to shed a few hundred pounds and be conditioned.

Because sumo wrestling and the NFL are two completely different sports.

Because there are no sumo diapers made of spandex. Besides, a helmet and bare man boobs with a sumo diaper is just wrong.

While many football players have been easily cracking the 300 pound mark for some time, a 500 pound slob would be a detriment to a football team.
