My nephew is 5 months and was born a month premature. He can sit on his own without support for about 5 min. at a time. He can also stand up holding on to a short table for about a min. at a time with out support as well. He rarely will sit on or laps. He always wants to stand up. He has been doing that for about 2 months with support. I was just wondering if this is normal or is he moving a little faster that average. Thank you!

5-6 months is normal. Any baby who is sitting up before that probably is not actually 'sitting up', but has been strategically placed with legs open and their top half squished forward. 3 months old is NOT old enough to be physically able to support their back into actually 'sitting up'!

Babies don't really get good at sitting up until 8 or 9 months when they can sit up for long periods of time and not fall over.

You'll find that your nephew will be physically ahead of many babies his age, but it's well within 'normal'.

Being premature is a funny thing. I have friends who had twins two months early, two weeks after my son was born. Although they technically were 2 months younger, they were right on track with my sons development, and even crawled before him. My son has been standing almost since birth, took his first step at 9 months, and was a full time walker at 10 months. He didn't crawl until he was 8 months old, but sat up for several minutes at a time at 5 months.

He is on the early side...but that is fine. My son was sitting on his own in front of the Christmas tree his first Christmas and he was born at the end of Sept (so he was 3 months old). He also adored standing...but he didn't walk too terribly early (he was 11 months when he was really on his own walking across rooms). But my daughters were early...walking at 8.5 and 7 months. The 7 month old was just a week shy of 6 months when she started pulling herself up on the couch and tables and crusing around. By age 2 we literally were pulling her off the roof of the house...so watch out for the early ones...they can be very mischievous...lol!

Also - don't encourage them to walk before they are ready - we never played the pass the baby back and forth to make them walk thing...we let them do it on their own. If you force them into it too young before they are developmentally ready you can cause leg problems like bow-legs and pigeon toeing. So treasure each moment...but yes - some babies are programmed to do things young.

I should also say my earliest walker is now 4 and she is still a very physical oriented kid but she does have speech delays. She is smart as a whip...but usually when they do something that early - another area will lag behind.

The average is btw 5 to 7 months. There is no need to worry unless baby is closer to 10 or 11 months and still showing no signs of sitting independently. Your baby is still on the young side, mine sat right around 6 months.

Well4 or 5 Months is normal for them to show a bit of interest in sitting up. Of course with support. My daughter sit up about 5 1/2 months by herself. Trust me it will come i know you hear that alot. But i bet you if u sit with her for a few times then actuallyput pillows behind her she will get the idea you arent going to be there all the time and she needs to be independent. So sit her up in teh couch corner alone too that helps. My daughter refuses to sit on laps very much she is 8 months and walking. No your not too early. You go girl!

five months is pretty normal for sitting up un-assisted, some babies can at this time, others not until much later (7-10 months). standing unassisted at this age is almost unheard of. i'd have to see it to believe it, especially if you are implying that he has been doing it since three months. some babies can "pull up" as early as 6 months but on average i think it is closer to 7-10 months as well. babies at three months simply are not developed ( head control, muscle tone) enough to ever stand unassisted. if you mean he can stand when someone puts him in a standing position and gives him some support however (like letting him hold on to something and you have your hands around his waist) then that is normal. buy the book what to expect the first year. it has an outline for mile stones. remember an "outline" is just that, all babies develop differently.

lol a pp said that a baby doesn't have proper head control at 3 months my little guy was lifting his head on his own from birth. lol just goes to show not all babies are the same. my little guy was holding onto the coffee table and standing (with my hand very close to catch him if he lost his balance) at 3 months. he still doesn't sit unsupported but I am not concerned, he's very smart and just likes to sit and watch everything going on.

I think he's moving a little fast for a preemie but it's great as long as he's initiating it. My daughter sat up at 5 months and pulled up to stand on her own at 6 months. Either way CONGRATS!!
