I should feel bad when I go shopping and spend X amounts of money on clothes etc as there are people out there who need the money more than me... I responded with I work for my money so I can spend it on what I want & I pay taxes etc, which contributes to others on benefits etc... It really got under my skin.

We pay taxes to our government so they can represent us abroad as well as at home and that includes international aid. Of course you can choose to donate money directly, and i'm sure most people do several times a year.

Don't feel guilty about it. I don't, even if you didn't spend the money on clothes or whatever you want, there will still be people who need it more. Its the way the world works.

It seems far to many people are too quick to want to judge matters they know little about. How does this individual know what you do or do't already give to charities? There are times I struggle with feeling I am too selfish and I do believe in giving to charities but I don't see much use in criticising others. Seldom wil this approach yield the response "yeah your right" followed by a healthy donation to those less fortunate. I always think it is good to saty in touch with those less fotunate, but no need to guilt people out over it.

Your response was correct. It even bugs me that someone thinks that. It's as if they are saying that we can't have anything unless everybody has the same.

I'm not saying we don't need to consider the less fortunate, but feeling guilty for buying clothes with money that you have earned is not right.

What did this other person want you to do with your hard earned wages, give it all to people worse than u? then u would be worse off yourself. like you said you pay your taxes so enjoy spending your own money!!

It sounds to me like the person who said this to you has convictions of their own and maybe a lot of guilt. You need to follow your own convictions, not someone else's guilt mongering convictions. So I think you responded right. It's not up to someone else to judge how much money you spend or what you spend it on. I personally like to be careful how much I spend and on what due to my own convictions, but I would never put that on someone else who doesn't share my convictions. Don't wear that person's guilt of conviction.

As you said its your money so spend it as you like I'm sure from time to time you put money into some collection or charity somewhere along the line so spend on and any spare few quid, you can send it to my back pocket charity... :-)

however much we offer to charity, theres always more we could give. although people like bill gates give ridiculous sums to charity, you could still say 'he lives better than the average man, he could give more' whats he supposed to do, live like the average man even though hes worth millions. for this reason, its the fact you give that counts, not how much. giving is just that A GIFT not an obligation
