Yes.
Set up a volunteer coordination company to help those that are homebound - the elderly, the infirm, new mothers, etc. You can help them with simple tasks such as laundry, yardwork, or just sitting with them and spending time.

This will be MUCH more effective than a time capsule, or a tree, or a bench. Not only will you be helping your community, but you get to mention it on your college applications! Talk about a win-win situation!!
