Valerian root. Works better for me than Dr. prescribed sleep aids! Give it a try, cheap and non-addicting.

Almost all OTC sleep aids contain the same ingredient, diphenhydramine. This is a 1st generation antihistamine that causes heavy sedation. This is effective but can cause next day sleepiness. Generic benadryl is the cheapest way to get diphenhydramine.

Valerian Root has worked for me. It helps you to fall asleep fairly quickly and you are not doped up in the morning. Remember though, it IS a chemical; just a naturally occurring one. Don't fall into the incorrect belief that the words "natural" and "beneficial" are synonomous. Things that are considered "natural" are not always harmless. Poison Ivy is natural, but it certainly is not harmless. If you've ever had an encounter with that, you know what I mean.
Don't be afraid to try natural remedies, just know what you are dealing with first. There's plenty of info waiting for you. Also remember that the chemicals in some natural supplements should not be combined with some prescription meds.

I just answered this question from someone else....and I forgot to put valerian in it!
Doxylamine Succinate (here called restavit) is a naturally occuring substance and it works.
Also promethazine hydrochloride (phenergan)
Chinese herbal rememdies with funny names that you get from chinese herbal medicine practitioners also work.
