Do you British people really think that when Americans speak we have an Austrailian accent?

I was in London this past July at London Heathrow Airport waiting for my flight to Kenya,and I'm a social girl so I decided to strike up a converstaion with a few Brits. (While waiting 8 hours for my flight.) And they thought I was from Austrailia, and when I said I'm not, I'm from New York. They were like "Really?" And I said yes. Why do you ask? And they simply said that my accent isso similar to the Austrailian accent. So is that what you British hear when we speak, or is it just some British folks. And Austrailians what do you think? Do we sound like you?

I have to say we do not....unless you pick up the british accent quickly. If you pick up the accent we do tend to sound like the Austrailians. I use to work with a guy that immigrated here and trust me.....Sound nothing like him.

I can only assume those people weren't even British,and a New York accent stands out even more. Trust me you sound nothing like an Aussie.

Maybe it is just your particular accent. Could be you were in London just long enough to alter your own accent. Or maybe it was just those particular people that couldn't place the accent. Most Brits I talk to think we all have 'southern' accents. Go figure.

no! i dont know what was up with those people... here in the uk we get so much american music, tv, films etc that we can DEFINATELY tell the difference. australians sound nothing like americans!
