A 2006 bio-archaeological study on the dental morphology of ancient Egyptians by Prof. Joel Irish shows dental traits characteristic of indigenous North Africans and to a lesser extent Southwest Asian populations....Genetic analysis of modern Egyptians reveals that they have paternal lineages common to indigenous North Africans/Berber populations primarily, and to Near Eastern peoples to a lesser extent.

In other words Egyptians are basically a mixture of what we today consider to be "Black" Africans and "Red" South Asian and Middle eastern people. But in fact they are more genetically African (Black) than not.

But does it really matter what race they are or were? Must we get so technical and have to do genetic research to appease people's egos?
If we must look at lineage it would be surprising to find out that most self described African Americans have less than 80% African ancestry and most self described white Americans are less than 90% European!!! Humans share 99.9% of the same genetic composition which means the only difference between us is what is visible on the OUTSIDE!!! People are people and we are all capable of making contributions to this world if given a chance.

Ptiviper if you were half as intelligent as you try to be you would know that there are thousands of tribes and ethnicities all over the vast continent of Africa. Among those different ethnicities from the north of Africa to the south the people all have different skin shades physical builds and facial characteristics. Some of the people of Ethiopia and Somalia have noses smaller than most Caucasian people and some Africans indeed have larger nostrils. So just like you downloaded a picture of a dark skinned African woman with broad nostrils there are also brown and light skinned Africans with narrow noses much like the ancient Egyptians; people's appearances adapt to fit their climate and habitat. So exactly what was your purpose of putting that picture and why do you "lol" What is funny about a woman? Is it because she is different than you and she doesn't fit your standard of beauty? You are grossly immature. I assure you that the average person with a shred of dignity would much rather be around that lady who quite possibly has a good heart than to be around a bellicose individual like yourself who obviously does not. Please go to school and get an education and better yourself, it may even help your self-esteem. And before you judge others you should take a long hard look in the mirror.

The fact of the matter is that it dosent matter. At the time it wasnt race that determined class. This is a eurocentric concept.RAcial differences didnt matter to the people. The people of egypt come in all colors. The ancient egyptians were no different. It only matters to the people who dont know history. I think that many societies especially european ones like for powerful figures in history to look like them. You just have to realize thats just how people are. All you can do is try and teach the truth!! But to me the real question is why does it matter? If jesus was black how would that change anything? Would they stop being christian?

I don't know why so many have taken offense to this question and post such angry replies.

Anyway, Hollybean is absolutely correct in her assertion that Egyptians were and still are African people of all colors who resemble Eastern Africans in appearance. They depict these images in their drawings of themselves. They do not share a lot of the same features as West Africans who were brought to the United States. Some Egyptian's resemble middle eastern Arabs some resemble light skinned African-Americans. At the end of the day very few are European in appearance. And they are various shades of brown.

Three of my close friends are Egyptian. One is often considered to be a light skinned black man. Another is often confused as Hispanic american. The other is often identified as an Arab American. At the end of the day , though, none of them consider themseves Black. I've asked them all and they each say unequivocally that they are not black. So maybe some of these poster's are right about the fact that the Egyptians themselves don't identify as black.

The same reason Haiti wasn't recognized as a country until the 1950's even though it gained independence 30 years before the US...same reason Jesus is portrayed as a WASP instead of a middle eastern Jew...To keep up the illusion of the status quo so many Europeans wanted to portray to the world...to rewrite history in thier favour.

And to all you people saying they are not depicted as black YES THEY ARE, they resemble a lot of EAST africans who tend to be fairer than West Africans (who were the slaves).

They ARE NOT the Arabs there today who arrived AFTER Cleopatras rule!!!!

They may have been a mix of African, Asian, Persian, and Arab BUT there are BLACK pharoahs and queen and are depicted as such with dark skin, thick lips, broad noses....DAFTIES!!!!!

Exerpt:
Art from the Ancient Egyptian era depicts people of all colors, including yellow, auburn, and black. It is thought that some of these color renderings were supposed to convey emotion. For the most part however, the Egyptians depicted themselves as dark-skinned, ranging from auburn to brown. Additionally, the Sphinx, considered to be in the likeness of Pharaoh Khufu, is said to have some features of the African ethnicity, specifically, the face's prognathism, and the outward slant of the face.

Anyways, we know that most likely ancient Egyptians were dark-skinned. So don't let other people bother when they say stuff like, "Why do Africans need to prove themselves" crap like that. These two sites might be interesting to you to read.

- This site is about the controvery surrounding the conflict of Egyptians being Black.

- This site is about: "In this paper we review the archaeological and linguistic evidence which suggest that Black Africans and Egyptians descended from the same biological ancestors, who formerly lived in the Proto-Sahara."

Have you seen Egyptian artwork? In the pyramids the art does not portray them as black. While there is and was a vast black population in the area I do not think they were part of the Egyptian society. Then again I never lived there and I was not there in that time frame so I really have no clue other than the information given to me.

Also....could you shoot me the links for the evidence you mentioned. It would be interesting to take a look at it. (You learn something new every day!!)

Ancestrally, as we all have, they had an African, black, nubian relative, but black, as we know people today, perhaps not. A mixture of ethnicties.

I love Eyptian history and enjoy studying the religions. I hope to go there this year to celebrate my 50th birthday!

Because that would call into question so many other things about their education, upbringing and deep-seated racism. So they just avoid it, kinda like with this question. ;-)

Why would they want to research it? They are already trying to rip your heart out for even suggesting Egyptians were black. Egypt is an African country full of black African people of all shades, just like here in the U.S. That's a fact.
The realization that blacks were the first civilized people of this world hurts them as much as the fact that their women desire sex with black men.

FACT!

You DO understand, don't you, that this entire campaign to portray the Egyptians as black was designed by clever African American entrepreneurs in order to sell books and 'evidence' to other African Americans who were desperate to have some kind of cultural identity beyond what they have already?

The 'streams of evidence' are utterly flawed and without merit. I've read them.

Look at the paintings, look at mummified remains, look at the people themselves, and you will see that although Nubians were PRESENT during the ancient Egyptian periods, the basic Egyptian citizen and the 'royal' family was Semitic just as they are today.

As for 'the original woman' whatever THAT is, there is none. Since we evolved from a more primitive form, there is no such thing as an 'original' human.

A better question, socially and culturally, would be 'why are african americans so desperate for some kind of historical cultural identity beyond the African that they need to re-invent history in order to create one?'

This is No secret nor is it kept from anyone. It is common knowledge that the blacks of Africa were from the Upper Nile. it is also common knowledge that the Eqyptians from the delta region looked much like they do today.
Your innuendo that it is just another way of white man keepin the brother down is innaccurate and racist in it's own merit.
