I purchased a used 1984 (I think?) and the bike has no spark. It only has one wire that goes to the points area (from the coil/condensor to under the flywheel) and with an ohmmeter it shows grounded. I disconnected the kill switch and also tested the ignition coil (high and low resistance, seems O.K.). I tried to get the flywheel off with as puller but it wouldn't budge and stripped the threads off of the puller. Any thoughts or suggestions?

--Are you sure you used the correct puller?

--Go to -Tools - Pullers.
--Loosen the inner bolt of the puller all the way.
--Install the puller as far as it will go into the flywheel.
--Tighten the inner bolt all the way.
--Hold the outter part of the puller with a wrench.
--Tighten the inner bolt of the puller.
--With a steel hammer, slam the inner bolt towards the engine. The flywheel should pop off. After a couple of hits, tighten the inner bolt some more and keep repeating the process - tighten-hit-tighten some more-hit-etc.

Sounds like you got a good mess on your hands. Here's the deal, If the bike has points you may be able to adjust them through the slots in the flywheel and be on your way. However, if you end up having to pull the flywheel there are a few things you can try. You said the puller lost its threads, so, you could invest in a new puller and try again, this time use some pentrating oil and some carefully applied heat. Worst case scenario, flywheel threads are stripped, then screw the puller in best as can be, tack weld the puller to the flywheel and pull it off. You could then add a new flywheel to your list of needed parts, sorry, not many options in this case.

I would check the high voltage ignition coil before you go puling off the flywheel because out of experience with these old hondas its usually the high voltage coil to go first and you could save yourself a lot of trouble by not having to take off the flywheel if its the coil. the exciter coil behind the flywheel should show ground as one end of it goes to the ground and the other to the coil to make the spark which will flow across the spark plug gap and to the engine as a complete circuit. try a new spark plug because ive seen spark plugs that are shorted out even on four stroke bikes. good luck. you can test the coil by checking if the high tension output grounds to the frame and if the single wire input also grounds to the frame through the coil.

Your out put from stator to cdi should be at least 60volts ac if it is not turning out that then your stator needs rewinding if you have sufficient power then check that trigger is working, using a multimeter on the lowest voltage scale connect to 2 wires from exciter when you kick bike over the needle should flicker, if not it is faulty, if ok then get your cdi and coil tested, these should be done under load, in other words on a tester not with ohm meter as some people do and get incorrect readings, apart from that there is only the plug cap and the plug

1st, the stator needs to be tested with meter set onA/C not D/C as many mistakenly do. 2nd I'd much more suspect the cdi unit before the stator.Test the the alternator on A/C to see if you get voltage + to wire - to where ever cdi grounds. If you read voltage your problem is the cdi/ coil unit. 1984s do not have points.*** something else occurred to me ,I had a1986 XR if left to sit too long was a ***** to start. I would clear the carb, add new fuel and get a buddy to tow me behind his truck until the bike fired.Sometimes it would take over a block. Once started ,if run on a regular basis it started fine ,but if left to sit too long I'd have to get pulled again.

check they wire connection to the spark plug, the wires may be snapped and you may need to get a new wirring harness for your spark plug
