I love Boston, and if you like the feel of a big city with lots to do and young crowds of people, you'd probably love it too. Harvard is across the river in Cambridge, which also has tons to do, and is just minutes from Boston. Harvard's campus is fabulous, and the city itself is so pretty. But obviously, if you're thinking of spending the next 4-8 years of your life here, then you should go to take a tour of Harvard first. I went on the tour my senior year and it was great, people were very informative and friendly. And that way you can also see the city and get a feel for what it would be like to live here.

I personally do not like Boston because I'm just bored of it, it's such a small city. But if you're not from here then that's a different story. Well good luck with Harvard. I went there I took a course in High School. It was alright. But Harvard is in CAMBRIDGE which is a different city right next to boston, I like Cambridge, I'd live there if I could but it's really expensive. Common places to go are like Copley, Downtown, sports fans go to Fenway or North Station to see games, there's several neighborhoods here, some are dangerous just like any other city, but at least you really don't need a car here. The public transportation is really convenient. It's also cheaper I believe than New York City. That's another nice thing, that NYC is a couple of hours away by bus so a lot of people well at least the ones I know including myself, like to take the greyhound for 15 bucks to get some nice, unique, affordable clothes because I'm telling you if you shop here, then you're gonna see people wearing the same stuff as you if that's a concern. You can catch the movies, go to some nice malls around here, there's stuff to do but it can get really boring after a while if you don't know where to go. (P.S. don't like wear a Yankees hat to a fenway game or something if you'd wanna go by any chance or they'd like kill you lol)
Well if you go to Harvard, good luck, work hard, don't let that work slip, it's hard I'd know I went there before but that's like any college you go to, you know. Don't get too caught up in the moment so that you can't focus. Do well in your studies and if you can stand your teachers saying "Class I'll be right back I have to pahhhk my cahhh in the hahhhvahd yahhd," don't worry you'll be okay. :-P

Boston is a great city. Cambridge, right across the river, is also great. I especially think it's a great place to go to school because you're not stuck there forever. It's overall very safe compared to most American cities and the area around Harvard especially - there's no violent crime there (some petty stuff like getting your bike stolen or vandalized so be careful of that stuff) but you don't have to worry about anything much more serious than that. It's a very expensive city - one of the most expensive in the country (after NYC, San Francisco and maybe Washington DC). But it has a lot to offer - cultural stuff, especially around Harvard, and lots of good restaurants.

Harvard is in Cambridge, over the bridge from Boston (across the Charles River).
I would look into living in Cambridge, Arlington or Belmont for safety and convenience. Sommerville has some ok spots. Check out rentals on Craigslist.
Central Square is right down Mass Ave. from Harvard Square, and is a culturally diverse funky place, not sure how safe it is these days.
The rents are high but you don't need a vehicle. Public transportation is extensive.

Boston is great. You will love it. Don't be fooled by people saying it is in Cambridge and it is a different city. Yes it is. But Cambridge is like a 2 mins walk from Boston or a train stop away, so it is not that far away.
Although Harvard's main campus is located in Cambrigde, the Medical and Business School are in Boston.
Both cities are fantastic. But something I have noticed, most people that go to school in Boston don't know their way around Cambridge and most people that school in Cambridge don't know their way around Boston although both cities are seperated by a walking bridge.

Boston is fantastic! The shopping is good but there are lots of Starbucks and there are cheap prices. THe boston Red sox are fantastic and to see them play is very enjoyable. The history in the town is rich and alive, follow the red road and look at all of the statues. Visit houses of amazing people... there are so many things to do. The highlight would be the Boston Food Market where food sellers come from all around the world to sell Tons and Tons of food. It is definately worth taking a trip to as it is rich with history and a wonderful experience for all in the midst.

this is true, harvard is in cambridge, ma - just outside of boston though.
boston is amazing! and safe if you are smart...i think that is what it's all about. also, harvard is right in harvard sq, a great area to go shopping, people watch, go to bars, the t station is right there, they have everything! boston is not a cheap city, but it definitely is not outrageous either.
i think if you get into harvard (and congrats on that) you should absolutely attend. it's a great place to hang out, but you have to be open to all different kinds of people, otherwise you won't be able to appreciate it!

you should definitely go, you will never regret the chance to go to a university like Harvard or Oxford ...
but it won't be cheap... I hope you have the financial backing for it!
Boston is a beautiful city, great atmostphere, great night-life, full of 'plastic-paddy' Irish Americans who know all about the great famine and the evils of the British Empire, but who've never been to Ireland...
for living expenses, about the same as somewhere like Edinburgh; probably cheaper.
For security, same as any large metropolitan city... you need to be sensible same as you would in London
