Did Einstein ever indicate that the gravity phenomena is a pull rather than an external distortion of space?

No. And he didn't call it an EXTERNAL distortion of space either. He called it a curvature of space-time caused by mass in this universe.

I haven't read everything the Einstein every wrote, but I've read some of it. I don't remember him ever writing anything like that.
