Government knows best, right?

2007-01-31 03:23:06 · answer #1 · answered by Dave ! 3 · 2 2

The reason the Chinese government censors the internet is the same reason all totalitarian governments censor things, they are extremely protective of their own power because they are afraid of losing it.

That is what totalitarian means, everything, EVERYTHING, is evaluated exclusively in terms of the power of the state. Tooth brushing, public transit, soybean production, laser research, shoelaces, whatever it is, it either makes the state more powerful or makes it less powerful.

Stalin said, 'I don't let the people have guns, why would I let them have [unsanctioned] ideas?'

The internet is a conundrum for china because it makes the state more powerful in some ways, but less powerful in others.

Communication and industrial coordination are so valuable to china, that it is worth a nearly equally large waste of time to remove the parts of the internet that are undesireable. Labor, is of course, no object to the communist party in China.

A lot of this paranoia of the Chinese ruling class can be traced to history, during which this ruling class has been successfully challenged numerous times. Often do to some damn fool idea that some peasant somewhere had, notably the boxer rebellion, which led to the deaths of tens of millions of people because some guy got hold of a bible and thought he was the returning son of god.

The internet is the equivalent of every peasant in china getting a million different bibles, so the Chinese oligarchy shakes in it's boots, then hires a hundred thousand internet censors.(and then pretends they don't exist)

It makes a lot of sense. Of course, it is evil. Reading what you want to read is a natural right of humans, as is revolting against your oppressive government.

[note:The people who are saying that it's what liberals would do to America are fools. This is not anywhere near the same as forbidding someone from calling you a *** or ****** at work. Especially when conservatives, once given control of the government for a few years, decide to record all phone conversations and attempt to repeal habeaus corpus. Few American conservatives grasp the concept of the totalitarian government enough to correctly identify a totalitarian measure.]

Many tyrant governments fear the knowledge the internet can spread to even to common people. "Loose Change" is an example of free speech the US government fears. China is a scourge on humanity, its no wonder they embrace walmart the way they do. Woe unto those who dont heed the warnings. We are blessed to have been born in america but our children will suffer our ignorance.

The Gvmt in China has learned censorship works from American Liberals. They saw just how effective liberals used the "Fairness Doctrine" here in eliminating dissent among the people, and how free speech hurts socialist causes. This is the prime reason why liberals want to return to the days of gvmt censorship.

The Internet makes it possible to know what is happening anywhere in the world so anyone who is not brainwashed out of their minds can work out the truth for themselves.

Because in a totalitarian state, information of the outside world is feared by the government. It is worse in N. Korea. YBIC

Because China is a communist country which we seem to overlook when we are borrowing money from them while we call Hugo Chavez a commie when he was elected democratically.

Funny world isn't it.

China is a communist country with a very elaborate bureaucracy. They'll crack down on anything that might threaten the government's power.
