I have a 97 Mercury Tracer (just like a Ford Escort) and I was wondering if
a) They naturally have a rough idle
b) The needle in the temperature gauge never goes to the center, it's always running cold.
These are my car's symptoms, any advice? By the way, I am planning to change the EGR valve soon.

It sounds like a leaky thermostat. The engine needs to get up to the right temperature to run properly. You probably need a 195 thermostat which would make the engine run at 210 or so. Fuel injected engines need to run hotter than carburetor engines.

Change the thermostat. It's never getting up to the operating levels in temperature. The cold start system isn't going off, which *might* explain the rough idle, but it's more likely you have other issues on the idle. But start there.

You can get an indication of how hot your engine is from the heater. The needle position on the guage doesn't tell you a lot.It should not be idling rough.
