If it wasn't for the Beatles, would we have had the musical and artistic strides we have today (though I will admit, it has begun to regress, i.e. American Idol, Britney Spears..etc.)

Yes. Their productivity was astounding!
Being a classical music buff myself, I would say, that their output in quality was the equivalent, and in some cases better than that of the classical composers, - with a different style of music of course. ;-)

for pop music, most definitely...rock, no...that honor would have to go to Elvis..but ALL modern-day music has it's roots in the Delta blues...Brittany and AI excluded lol
