Or do they just more respect you because you are the dominant one? I'm talking more dogs & cats.

I don't think animals are familiar with concepts like "respect". They might be afraid of someone who mistreats them and avoid a confrontation but obviously that has nothing to do with love or respect. Sometime when you get the chance... go visit a mama cat with a new litter of kittens or a dog with new puppies and watch the tender love and care they are given by the parent. Play with a puppy or a kitten and then ask yourself if joy isn't something that comes naturally to all creatures. Or better yet, get to know a Golden Retreiver. Then you won't need to ask this question.

This isn't quite what you;re asking, but animals definitely seem to show affection for people and for each other. I had a pair of rabbits who were inseperable. They always groomed each other, cuddled, etc. When the girl died, the boy groomed her body and then seemed very depressed. He was much less active then usual, and just really looked sad.

As a side note.... dogs seem more loving than cats... I like cats but I wouldn't characterize my old roommate's kitty as "loving" anyone :-p

Animals certainly love, and care. Cats especially know your emotions. Some will stay close to you if your are sick, they have been known to save lives. Cats and dogs are little people in fur coats. If you and your pet are 'close' - you can see their love within their eyes.

Actually, most generally your cat or dog pretty much are the 'boss' of the house.

Hey! I'm currently studying animal behaviour at uni, and animals CAN love but it's a different kind of love to us humans. For example, i love my mum and dad cos i am aware they r my mum n dad. a dog loves his mum because she protects him and gives him milk, but it's not 'aware' that she is his mum. A dog/cat will love you cos you look after them, protect them and show them affection but they don't have the conscience to know you're it's owner. Some animals can love more than others, depending on how clever they are/brain strcuture etc. For example, elephants can die of a broken heart if a member of their herd is killed but a mouse will sacrifice it's buddy to check if a mousetrap is dangerous!! hope this helped x

Of course animals can love! They can certaintly -hate-. You can tell when animals can't stand you. They'll do things purposefully to upset you. And when an aminal loves you, you can tell too. I have a calico cat named Sugar, and she's the sweetest thing in the world. When she knows I"m upset, she comes and sits by my feet or comes near me. Last night I was so upset and stressed from work I went to lay down. I've lain down for naps after work before, but Sugar never comes to bother me. She doesn't like laying on me while I'm sleeping or laying down. But she came trotting into the bedroom, jumped on the bed, climbed on me and gave me some company.

I say that's love.

Animals absolutely love. My dogs have the most heart wrenching cry I have ever heard when I come home, or even as I leave because I can't take them with me. You can feel the love you get from them just as you do from a person. It's something you feel deep inside you.

Of Course they have feelings. Love is hard to define. But, I know that they get sad when they lose a friend and understand companionship. I think dogs and cats love good owners in their own way.

For animals love is complicated i mean i believe that they show affection my acceptance and tail wagging and licking you in the face i don't know what better than walking in my home and seeing my dogs waiting for me on the front step tails wagging waiting to jump on me and smother me in kisses. I guess i would call that love.

aw... I'm sure my animals love me!! My dog Joey is always the first to greet me as I come in the door. If either of my dogs feel I am threatened, they protect me!
