Perhaps your teacher meant 'identity' elements?

Multiplicative identity, I, is an element such that for any element X:

X*I = X

Additive identity, 0, is an element such that for any element X:
X+0 = X

For real and complex numbers I = 1 (one) and 0 = 0 (zero)

Is it identity elements?
In multiplication, let a be any Real number,
a * 1 = a
One is the multiplicative identity.

In addition,
a + 0 = a
Zero is the additive identity for Real numbers.
