it depends on the genre you want to get into it

If its just pop - you'll have to attend auditions so best bet is to buy papers like "The Stage" which will ask you to send demos for auditions

If its for more band based work - scan music adds in drownedinsound, nme, gumtree, any music magazine or website you can think of. Also - its a good idea to create a myspace account as you can post your music online and people can search it. I'm doing this currently and have had over a thousand hits in2 months!!!

If you're in a band, you need to start gigging. send the demo out to promoters of gig venues in your local area - the more gigs you do, the more confidence and reputation you'll build and the more chance you'll get of being spotted.

The best route though is myspace as you'll gain fans, etc which is the most important thing you need in music

Wow! You received many great suggestions. I especially liked Missy's heartfelt and informative comment. However... You are 14? Yes? People say you sing real good. This is your dream. Ok... great start. Now you just need to know how to really get started. Here goes... Step 1 Believe in yourself. Start singing all the time and don't stop. Think about it. That will give you the best shot of #1 Getting Even Better #2 If you're singing all the time, you won't even have to tell people you're a singer, they will hear you singing and know. Step 2 Convince others to believe in you. Many "not so good singers" have amazing abilities of convincing people to believe in them. If you can sing really well, it should be easier for you, but still may be a challenge. Once you have your friends and family convinced this is what you should be doing and they support you, not by just telling you you're great, but by helping you continually improve and reach out to new eyes and ears, then you have your foundation. Step 3 Develop yourself as an artist. Set goals and achieve them. If you need some ideas you can check out a cool articles on the Camp Be It Blog that specifically address Artist Development. After this there are many variables to consider, and there is no set formula for success in the music business. It really does boil down to more of who you know than what you know. So although I do feel the books suggested to you are SOLID references, they will never replace a positive attitude and effective networking. I am co founder of a camp created to help talented kids and their parents get started and stay on track in the music business. We still have auditions open for Camp Be It. You might want to check it out with your parents. But hurry because camp starts July 16-22. Hope this helps!

If you go to a bookstore such as Borders or Barnes and Nobles they should have a book, I beleive it's called "The Musicians Guide 2007" or whatever the most recent year may be they have available. It lists every record company from small independent labels to major labels all over the nation. It'll say for each label what kind of music they want, exactly what needs to be sent , how long it takes them to reply, address info, and pretty much anything else you'd want to know. It costs between 30 and 40 bucks but is well worth it. Im not 100% positive it's called the "musicians guide" but if that's not the exact title it's something close to that.

send it to all local radio stations, record labels. you can get addresses for places like this by doing a simple search.i have given cds away at concerts, local radio events, where ever.some local clubs will let you do a set for free if you can bring in "X" amount of fans. there are many ways to get your music out there, just don't let the fact that there are hundreds of other people sending in their music too discourage you. most importantly, make your music stand out. don't try to sound like another band, by doing that you limit your fan base. good luck. hope i helped at least a little.
