Try something personally associated with what he loves best.. you might try tickets to a show of music that he appreciates. Or maybe a monogrammed leather or cloth music sheath, that holds your music while you are enroute. Or maybe a really nice metronome.. not used very much anymore, but meaningful to a vocalist/pianist. Whatever you decide, if this young man is as talented and versatile as you make him out to be, he will appreciate anything he is given with love!

You can hire a recording studio for a day. It is rather cheap - so don't worry that it is too much. Make sure you get a technician in the cost though so that you can have a recording of his music. If you don't get a technician though, you will not have use of the equipment, unless your friend knows how to use it. Most studios are different though, I would be almost for certain that he doesn't. Just tell him something to get him to take his music. Then, you both can have music ready and in the end have a cd to take home. It can also later be used as a sample for future jobs!

Go to a music store that has the books of sheet music, perhaps one with some of his favorite type of music. Some Ray Charles is also a good choice. If he likes country music and you live near Nashville... try out the Ryman. He could go in there and record a CD in a professional recording booth. I took my 18 year old daughter there and she loved it so much she wants to go back. The visit also heightened her interest in music. Who knows......a future Nashville star?

I don't know what your budget is, and I don't know how well you know them. If you know them well enough to know their taste, memorabilia of their favorite composer is always great. You can always go on ebay and get some vintage sheet music, a cocktail napkin where an artist may have scribbled a few lyrics on, or something like that. If you don't know them well, everyone loves a nice book on their favorite hobby.

I have no idea of the level at which your friend/boyfriend performs, but you could get one of those experience certificates that would give him the opportunity to go into a recording studio for the day.

Get him a Keith Emerson T-Shirt.

Right now the seem to be just temporarily sold out, but maybe not for too long. Any keyboardist would appreciate this as Keith would be one of their finest peers.
