Edison.Gates and Microsoft only made it because IBM was looking for an operating system for their new PC's and chose DOS and it grew as PC's grew. It was the growth of PC's that made Microsoft since they clinched the market by default by being the first ones in. . What they did was not rocket science. Gates was just in the right place at the right time. Edison did some real invention and innovation. Edison was also good with business; his company was General Electric.

It's comparing apples to wingnuts. Gates had one great intellectual idea and made billions for a number of people. Edison had thousands of great ideas that turned into physical goods that many people benefitted from. They both changed world history, but they did in radically different ways.
