Unless there have been major modifications to the engine, the car should run fine on regular (87 octane fuel).

My 1997 Neon would get 36 miles per gallon on the high way. around 28 in the city. I really miss that little car. BTW plymouth made neons from 1995 up to the time Plymouth was disbanded. Just in case anyone else thinks plymouth only made neons 1 year.

Regular Unleaded (87 octane) should be enough.

The only Reason to consider higher octane would be for the longevity of the engine.

However, Paying for it at the pump is wasteful.

Better idea would be to simply use a fuel additive (like stp) to boost your octane level and to clean your fuel system.
you don't really need to do it more than once a month.
When you use it, be sure to have the fuel tank almost empty, pour the additive in, then fill your tank allowing it all to mix.

Everyone that mentioned 87 oct. is correct. Especially if you live in a cold climate. HIgher octane is harder to ignite. There fore in the winter you want the highest volatile octane, and that being 87! The higher may not ignite in your neon in below freezing conditions. I did not realize this untill I ran into the problem. After which it was explained to me in that fashion, by the manager in the garage.

had a 2000 plymouth neon for 6 years, its built to take 87, but i wouldnt go under 89, helps with longevity of the engine to use a higher octane, no reason to use 91 though

Open the glove box. Pull out the manual. Read it. It will tell you the recommended octane according to the manufacturer. Then pull up to the pump and fill it up with the regular unleaded.

All gases are the same. Have you ever wondered why the refill Gas tank comes and dumps all the gas in the same storage. It is then pumped by fools in their cars from three different nosles, paying three different prices.

Any of the 3.... all cars made today run on all 3 grades, it is better to use regular... high octane will ruin your catalytic convertor.
