OK...GREAT INFO...WITH THE LOW PITCH I WOULD RECCOMEND THAT YOU WILL NEED 8 SQUARES OF SHINGLES....BROKEN DOWN THAT MEANS 24-26 BUNDLES OF THREE TAB OR 30 YEAR DIMENSIONAL SHINGLES. IF YOU GET HEAVIER OR LONGER LIFETIME SHINGLES YOU WILL NEED TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF BUNDLES ACCORDINGLY. WITH A 4/12 PITCH, I RECCOMEND A 30 LB ASTM FELT UNDERLAYMENT OR A DOUBLE 15 LB FELT.
BEST OF LUCK ON YOUR PROJECT.

Since you have decided to do the right thing and remove the existing layers, then by all means it is well within the realm of DIYer. However, go pro! Drive around to other re-roof job site, see how the pros protect the shrubbery and what-not. Furthermore invest in a good roofing shingle shovel (less that $35), a roller magnet, and hire a dumpster, this won't be cheap, but its the best way to rid yourself of what will be literally tons of debris. The more thought and planning you put into to this the easier this really unpleasant process will be. Let me know if you need further info

Measure the actual size of the roof, not the floor space. Normal asphalt singles come three bundles = 100 square feet. So, if your garage roof measures 800 sf you would need 24 bundles of shingles.
