It's human nature. We are all affected by different things. Some people may have a soft spot for animals or children & will be particularly sympathetic to issues concerning them but not be affected by other issues. We tend to gravitate toward those we relate to, things and people that interest us & that we can personally relate to our emotions and experiences. Someone may seem very sensitive in one area & apathetic in another. In our society, we are faced with atrocities every day. It's in the news. We in a sense become desensitized to it. The death of a thousand people is a statistic. The death of one that has a personal story attached will pluck at someone's heartstrings more. We have to have some personal involvement (sympathy) to be affected. Some people don't feel sympathy at all. Some only feel it for certain people, in certain situations. Who knows? Humans are strange. There is no explaining human behaviour!

People act like this problably because they don't know someone is sensitive to it, or don't understand how people would be sensitive to this issue. If of course they are not doing it on purpose.

All of us suffer from subjectivity... more so are those who are more emotional than logical in their behavior. Objectivity is more easily preached than practiced.
