I know you said you don't want to go to the City, but that aquarium near Coney Island (mentioned in the first answer) would definitely thrill a 14-year-old who is interested in marine biology. It is fantastic!

The octopus, who would squeeze himself into a corner even if given a larger tank (invertebrates apparently like confined areas), will wow kids of all ages as he ripples his tentacles past the glass.

The Sea Lion shows are wonderful - outdoors all year, weather permitting - and are included in the price of admission. Call in advance to check times.

A Deep Sea 3-D simulator ride ($4 per person, per ride, with purchase of an Aquarium admission ticket) is open to folks 36 inches and taller, and launches participants inside a deep sea submarine to explore the ocean floor, dive with a sperm whale, and tangle with a giant squid. The simulator is open all year.
