I came out to my car after work a few days ago, and when I started to back out it felt funny. Sure enough, one of my front tires was flat. While changing it, however, I noticed two long gashes in the outer sidewall. They both ran radially up and down, and were about 1-2 inches apart, closer near the rim and further apart near the tread. My first assumption was that the tire got slashed, especially since you don't generally think of a parked car blowing a tire, but these were very smooth and relatively symmetrical cuts, and the more I've thought about it, the more I've begun to wonder if this was some form of under-inflation failure. However, I've never heard of a tire blowing out in that particular pattern before, so I thought I'd ask if anyone else had?

Vandalism. Five years in the tire business and I have never seen a tire fail in they way you describe. I have seen plenty of vandalized tires though and that is exactly how you describe.

particular a sidewall on a radial tire may well be repaired counting on the dimensions of the hollow. I had a tire save for over 20 yrs and did quiet some sidewall upkeep. Many places should help be attentive to no because of the fact they have not got the right sidewall patches. you may't use a nicely-known patch to do this.

Typically if there is a defect in the sidewall of the tire, you will first get a bulge and the tire will be off balance. A slit means someone with a sharp knife didn't like you. A sidewall failure usually blows a jagged hole.

Any tire person that has been in the business for a while should be able to tell you, by how the cords are cut, very smooth sounds like a razor knife.

If someone were to vandalize your tire, they would be in a hurry as to not get caught.
Therefor would tend you make ONE cut or puncture, and run.

I think you drove over something with a low tire.
