Can we not have enough self-confidence to know the value of our answers without reference to the 'Best Answer' tag?

I don't. Frankly I think that most of my answers should be best answers. I'm just often cheated out of my rightful title (sigh, true genius seldom appreciated in its own time...)

Tee hee! Ok I'm totally joking!!! I wish I was that cocky. It would make life much easier!

I usually feel pretty good about my answers (I speak from the heart) but it is very flattering & empowering to have someone else validate your answer by choosing it as the best. It's human nature. We like praise. It's natural. How do I know if a painting is good until someone tells me they like it or want to buy it? How do I know my songs are good until I hear the applause of the audience? I may put something out there, thinking (hoping) it has value but until others have appraised it, I can't really be sure. Yes I suppose it is a self-confidence thing...

Feel free to boost my confidence by choosing me as Best Answer!
:)

It makes me feel good when I get chosen as best answer out of all the others.

I guess its because knowing that someone liked what you thought, and seem to know makes us feel good. Thats what I love about my answer being chosen for Best Answer.

Well I think it's more that we are happy that we helped someone out there and knowing that our support was validated and appreciated. Even if it wasn't rated the best answer by the questioner, atleast someone else who voted our answer "as the best" was simply recognized. But for me, personally, I find it rewarding in itself just to be of help in general.
