Try to keep the class interesting. You know, different projects and assignments. use diferent things outside of the classroom norms, like if you have to have the students read and assignment, have each of them read a different part of the same book or to learn about verbs etc use an example that will keep their interest, like modern music or video games, etc. I am 51 now and I can't stress enough just how boaring learning any subject can be. My weakest class was History, but English always interested me after my 9th grade. I had a wonderful English teacher. She always managed to keep things interesting. As far as the critical analysis, I'm not exactly sure what you mean, so I will leave that one alone. All, I am saying is to keep it interesting and you will have no problems. I hope this helps.

For Creativity - Do a short 2 page story a week asignment for about 10% of the grade.
Critical analysis - using those tons of stories - have the students pick one or two and dissect it.
Lack of reading - go back to the classics, and show don't tell them but show them why they are classics. point out how the story of Rambo is just like Ulyesses.

Give them respect and respect the work they produce.
