I have a reverse osmosis system. (The one I have needs to be put on a system with a water softener.) It cost about $1000 which included installation and lines to the kitchen sink and to the ice maker (refridgerator). We bought bottled water before. This system paid for itself in one year. It makes 2 gallons of pure water per day. It's great.

Our water had nasty stuff in it, but was easy to cure. Get your water checked at any hospital, (it costs) then go to a water specialist for their info on what you need. We were lucky, our water is from a dug well and is soft. So..what we needed was an ultraviolet light osmosis system and a particle filter. We put this in ourselves and the cost was less than $1000. Cdn. After this had been in for 5 months we tested our water from a kit and found after 48 hours in the heat (the kit, that is) our water is still pure. We have to change the particle filter every 3 months and the ultraviolet bulb every 12 months. Works for us.
