I saw this term used as an answer to a question about single-sex locker rooms.

I'm asking here rather than just looking up the term because I want personal insights as well as definitions. The term may be self-explanatory, but again details would be helpful to all.

What should "straight" people know that they presently don't?

Thanks.

"Heteronormative" basically means that since most people are straight, they're going to set up the norms for all of us. The single-sex locker rooms are part of it--the assumption is that men will want to look at naked women and women will want to look at naked men. The problems with it come when it becomes "heterosexism"--that is, the assumption that all people can or should be straight.

It's the concept that mainstream society assumes the "norm" is to be heterosexual and the force-feeding of this idea upon everyone else with expectations of conformity.

That which forces one to behave in a heterosexual fashion (family, friends, situations, society...)

It's a new and improved "politically correct" way for straights to "imply" that the homosexuality is "wrong".
