Well, Austin is a small town compared to London and it's not really like the rest of Texas so you won't get the whole cowboy experience most people expect out of this state. But for a smallish city (less than a million), it's pretty cool. Definitely laid back. Everyone dresses very casually.

It's hot here for about 6 months of the year--April to October. Plan your packing accordingly.

Texas food is something wonderful. Go to Hoover's for the best, most authentic Texas/Southern cooking: http://www.hooverscooking.com/. You MUST have chicken fried steak. It's delicious (it's steak, fried in the same manner as chicken--the dish doesn't contain chicken). Go across the street from Hoover's to El Chile for moderately-priced interior Mexican food done by accomplished American chefs. http://www.elchilecafe.com/ Go to as many Tex-Mex restaurants as you can. To experience Austin's version, go to Trudy's http://www.trudys.com/. Be sure and go to any one of the zillion other Tex-Mex restaurants you see. And if you see a taco cart on wheels, eat there, too. It's good.

People here are generally very friendly and polite to strangers. People will just start talking at bus stops, wherever. Oh, for public transit in Austin(no where near as comprehensive as it should be), go to this website: http://www.capmetro.org/

In downtown Austin, the typical night life spots are 6th street, east of Congress Avenue and 4th street west of Congress Avenue. 6th street is basically 6-10 blocks of bars and very little else. The legal drinking age in the US is 21, so if your friend is younger than you, you could run into trouble with access to some bars and clubs. It relies upon on the way of existence you're searching for. Chicago is a huge cosmopolitan city, Austin is smaller and has greater of 'college' experience. this isn't any longer extremely the 'hippy' city it was once via each and all the companies that have been moving to Austin at the instant, inspite of the incontrovertible fact that it nonetheless has that experience in quite some respects. Chicago has the theatre/fantastic arts/ballet, and Austin has quite some stay bands and that style of subject. I stay in Austin and that i will inform you that's an outstanding city to stay in - this is totally distinctly, the persons are friendly and could make an effort to help out strangers. And for the main area this is advantageous and laid-lower back. there's no longer quite some crime, and that's a distinctly secure city standard. once you're making plans to have young babies quicker or later, Austin could be suitable. The drawbacks are that Austin has long, warm summers. each and every so often it could attain temperatures of a hundred and ten++. i visit confess that i do no longer only like the nice and cozy summers very lots. yet once you may cope with it, i might say Austin is an outstanding selection for you. Chicago winters are additionally brutally chilly from what I hear, so as this is something to take heed to to too.

yea dude the night life kicks ***. and they have really great pot, too! If you plan right you can do **** all day and night. The people are cool for the most part. If you go on 6th street ( I am sure you will) just be careful. Try not to walk alone, and keep a tight leash on any friends you have that go to another bar.

Out of all the times i have been I have had just one run in with some thugs. I was walking by Emo's and three dudes tried jacking with me but it didn't work. Also My boss/and best freind for 20 years had a run in in the same area but he was not as lucky. He was mugged/robbed ( he was drunk) so don't remember much.

As for checking **** out dude visit these sites.

There are tons of live music venues. Check out the Southwestern cuisine, at Castle Hill Cafe on W. 5th, Mexican (Tex-Mex) at Matt's El Rancho on S. Lamar Blvd. and don't forget to try Texas Barbecue. It's hot here in the summertime so bring casual cool clothes if your coming that time of year. Spring and fall is pretty warm also. (If your here in the fall you might want to try some American Football.) I you like to swim, check out Barton Springs Pool, it's spring fed. For a day trip you might venture to San Antonio, the Riverwalk is beautiful and there is a strong Mexican culture. Texans are very friendly, and will be curious about where you are from, so it will be easy to make friends and converse. Have a wonderful trip.
