Too all encompassing a question to answer--BUT, it was a fascinating period of time. Over taxation by the Roman Catholic Church AND King Louie XVI; gross overspending by his regime and, of course, Marie; lack of adequate food for the peasantry; the greatest amount of land was owned by the Catholic Church; high cost of defending the country against Prussia, Spain, England, French and Indian wars against England's conquests in America, including support of our American Revolutionary War. The rising power of the "bourgeoisie"--middle class; invention of the printing press, 1588, to spread news and information more rapidly.
