The L Means 50, but when a larger number is placed after a smaller number, you have to subtract it. So if L means 50 and X means ten and I means one, you have to look at that as 10 from 50 (which is forty) plus one, which is forty one. If it were 91, it would be XCI, C meaning 100. Other Roman Numberals:
I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1000

Put a line above and below any of these, and you are multiplying it by 1000.
