I recently had a friend come up and stay in my apt for a few days when I was gone. He smoked inside the whole time, and now it reeks. Besides Febreeze, does anyone have any good suggestions as to getting rid of the smell? I know this sounds silly, but would a humidifier possibly help to clear out the smell?

Air out the room very well. Launder all fabrics that can possibly be laundered (curtains, throw rugs, blankets that were sitting out, bedding, etc... Use fabric softener, and hang dry them all over that room, to get the good smell from the softener in the room. Put down a carpet deodorizer down on the carpet, let it sit a few minutes then vac. Spray the febreeze on items that cannot be laudered. (Throw pillows, etc...) If he smoked all over your house, then I would even wipe down kitchen and bathroom counters with a great smelling cleaner (Lysol Kitchen Cleaner) and wipe down your walls with a bucket of pine-sol and water. Light a great smelling oil candle and you'll be good to go. And your house will be clean. Cause you know ciggerette smoke is not just an odor, but.. a harmful substance that lingers on all surfaces. You need to clean the areas. Then take a nice soapy shower. :)

If the house is not regularly smoked in some house cleaning will do it. Febreeze any fabrics that can not be washed, get some foam spray on carpet cleaner, Woolite, and sweep. Then burn a candle. If it still smells you will have to wipe all your walls with soapy water. The Woolite can be used of furniture as well. I do not think a humidifier will work but an air cleaner will help clean the air only. Also, opening windows if it is not cold could do the trick. The candle will help if you can not get an air cleaner or open your windows.

Look if you have a window open it while you are gone. Also go to walmart and get a circulating fan and while you are there have the fan running and the door open. Humidifiers only add moisture to the air they do not circulate the air. You need the air circulated and you need fresh air coming in to replace the stale air that you are trying to get rid of.

You will have to wash and/or clean all of the fabrics in your place. Curtains, pillows, furniture, etc. Wash your windows too. A humidifier won't help. Even an air purifier wouldn't do anything. The tar and crap in the cig. smoke has fallen and settled into all of you fabrics as well as stuck to you windows, walls, and ceiling. I hate the disrespect of smokers.

I recommend an Ionizer. We use them in the Quality Inn i work at to get the smoke smell out of the rooms. They work wonders.
