The word Sade sati is a Hindi word and means seven and a half. There are no exact english spellings assigned anywhere to it.So you could use any of the two spellings.
As you have yourself mentioned Shani remains in one raashi for two and a half years only. One's raashi which in Hindu astrology means the sign in which the moon was placed at the time of birth can be any one of the 12 zodiac signs in astrology. Thus Shani can remain in one's rashi for two and half years only and not seven and half years. However the term Saddesati denotes the period of seven and half years during which shani or saturn passes over the three zodiac signs comprising of the sign before one's raashi, the raashi itself and one sign after the raashi. It is said that during all this period of seven and half years one's mind remains restless since shani or saturn the planet of darkness casts its shadow on moon representing the mind from one sign before the sign it is placed in and one sign after too besides the sign itself.Hope i have conveyed it properly.
