Take into consideration age and condition of the engine. Are you burning any oil? How much? Less than a quart to a full quart between oil changes, I'd replace the spark plugs every 30-50k if so to catch fouling out plugs before they develop into a full blown misfire. If you're not burning any oil, go with manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule. I replace the wires every other tune up.

The best way to determine when you should tune up your car is by mileage, taking into consideration the way you drive, climate, etc. There should be manufacturers recomendations you can use as a guide, if you don't have the owners manual, you should be able to find the information on line. Also, if you change the plugs, the use of platinum plugs will increase the interval between tune ups dramatically.

Hope this helps.
